I have two answers to What is Pinch Harmonic and How You Do It?

Short Answer:

Pinch harmonic is a sound produced by forcing the amplitude of the actual notes to be narrower, and that makes the frequency higher. Hence, the higher notes (usually major 3rd, and 5th, and an octave higher).

Harmonic itself can be produced by slightly touching a string and plucking it on top of the fret (not the bar). Because even when making a note on the guitar, the fret is actually what determines the pitch of the note, not the wood part we’re pressing on.

Longer Answer:

Slight history Of Pinch Harmonic:

In classical (nylon) guitar playing, the guitarist plucks the string right on the fret and lightly touch the string to block the string’s movement. The gesture is the same as a pinching finger. Hence, the name pinch harmonic is created.

In Modern Rock Era:

In a more modern era, this trick becomes even more popular. Thank’s to George Lynch and Eddie Van Halen who with their unique playing and killing whammy bar technique brought pinch harmonics to the younger audience through rock music in the wave of punk and disco.

However, electric guitar players are not (only) using the same plucking technique as the nylon guitar players. Instead, the sound is produced by holding the string using the thumb right after the string was struck. The pinch harmonic is not produced on the fretboard alone, but mostly by doing it above the pick-ups area. This allows the guitarists to produce pinch harmonic faster by moving only their right arms.

Slayer announces the first leg of farewell world tour, which opens with San Diego arena show. Slayer Farewell World Tour, May 10 concert at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center, with dates running through June 20 at Austin’s 360 Amphitheatre.

Slayer burst onto the heavy metal scene during the early 1980s, becoming one of the “Big Four” acts in thrash metal (along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth) on the strength of its landmark album “Reign in Blood.”

Understanding Ionian Modes

Basically, people know at least two notation scales. Those are Major scale and Minor scale. Both are relatives to each other and consists of same notes. But still, both sound different feels different and used differently. The easiest way to notice the difference is by listening to how it sounds. If it sounds happy and uplifting, we can almost predict that it’s a Major scale. When it sounds sad and stressful, then it’s a minor scale. Let’s start with the first modes of the major scale, we call it Ionian modes.

There are 12 notes in one octave, including the flats and sharps:

1 – 1 1/2 – 2 – 2 1/2 – 3 – 3 1/2 – 4 – 4 1/2 – 5 – 5 1/2 – 6 – 7

We are only covering the popular scales know, while there are other scales that have even narrower or wider interval. Like microtonal in the video below…

Let’s Start From The Ground

First, we have to understand what notes are on a Major scale.

They are: do – re – mi – fa – so – la – ti – (high) do <— without sharps and flats in between.

Or in numeral: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 1 <— without sharps and flats in between.

Or in the alphabet: c – d – e – f – g – a – b – c <— also without sharps and flats in between.

There are distances between notes in this scale:

• Whole note from 1 to 2
• Whole note from 2 to 3
• Half note from 3 to 4
• Whole note from 4 to 5
• Whole note from 5 to 6
• Whole note from 6 to 7
• Half note from 7 to high 1

On the piano, you can play it from C to high C without hitting the blacks. The blacks are the half notes.

As you can see, a whole note equals to 2 frets on the guitar. That means one fret on the guitar has the value of half note.

We call this scale Ionian modes, the first mode in the major scale.

Tur Bon Jovi dan Rilis Ulang Album This House is Not For Sale

Bon Jovi, nama band yang diambil dari nama penyanyi utamanya ini mengumumkan, tur Bon Jovi “This House is Not For Sale…” akan diselenggarakan tahun ini. Band pop-rock yang besar dan melejit dengan berbagai pencapaian di dunia musik di tahun 80s sampai 90s ini terkenal dengan hitsnya yang berjudul “Livin’ on A Prayer”, “Lay Your Hands on Me”dan memperkenalkan diri pada generasi millenial dengan lagu “It’s My Live”.

Band ini tidak pernah menemui masa kelam, walaupun belakangan ini memang sudah tidak setenar dulu. Tapi tidak begitu di hati fans setianya. Apalagi Bon Jovi terkenal kerap mendaur ulang lagu-lagunya sehingga terdengar segar kembali. Sepertinya mendaur ulang butuh tingkat kreatifitas yang berbeda ya? Yang jelas hasilnya tetap keren. Saya sendiri terakhir dengar Bon Jovi di album What’s Left Feels Right, yang memang walaupun performanya tidak sekuat album-albumnya terdahulu, namun tetap enak didengarkan sepanjang perjalanan.

Jon Bon Jovi, vokalis dan pendiri band ini pernah merilis album solo namun gagal di pasaran. Begitu pula ketika dirinya mencoba peruntungan di karir film, tidak berhasil juga. Sepertinya memang Jon Bon Jovi ditakdirkan untuk bekerja dalam tim (band) ya?

Nilai tambah Bon Jovi adalah karena band ini mempunyai gitaris yang ketenarannya setara dengan band itu sendiri, yaitu Richie Sambora. Gitaris keren yang sempat memiliki proyek solo saat berpasangan dengan Cher ini tenar dengan lagunya yang berjudul “Stranger in This Town”. Richie Sambora pun masuk ke dalam jajaran gitaris terbaik dunia yang bisa didengarkan di album “Guitars That Rule The World” yang mengilhami lahirnya album serupa di seluruh dunia, contohnya: SmashGitar di Indonesia >;)

Band ini baru saja dinominasikan untuk masuk ke dalam Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Dengan begitu banyaknya sukses, kenapa harus jual rumah? Tidak usah bingung, karena yang diumumkan adalah, “This House is Not For Sale Tour 2018” Hahaha…

Tur yang merupakan kelanjutan dari tur tahun 2017(The House) ini akan dimulai pada 14 Maret di Denver dan ditutup pada 14 Mei di Capital One Arena, Washington, DC. Dengan harga tuket 29.50USD sampai 549.50USD dan harga khusus untuk anggota fans club.

Nama This House is Not For Sale diambil dari nama albumnya yang dirilis pada tahun 2016, yang akan dirilis ulang dengan dua tambahan lagu baru (When We Were Us dan Walls) pada 23 Februari mendatang.

About The Songs

The songs I chose are rock-heavy metal songs published around the 70s to 90s. I picked those with heavy and epic guitar riffs, not necessarily difficult even we all know that 80’s rock songs tend to sound technical. Radiohead adalah grup musik asal Inggris Raya yang telah terjun dalam dunia musik sejak 1985. Itu berarti hampir 33 tahun! Bayangkan kalau band ini memutuskan untuk menuntut siapa pun yang memiliki karya yang mirip dengan karyanya. Lumayan buat pensiun.

Yon Koeswoyo May You Rest In Peace

Yon Koeswoyo is the founder of the legendary band in Indonesia, Koes Plus which is a continuation of the Koes Bersaudara which is a transition from Koes Brothers.

The musician born in Tuban, East Java, November 27, 1940, died yesterday, 5 January 2018. He left four children. Yon and Yok started their musical career after being inspired by Kalin Twin, an American duo. And very influenced by Everly Brother which has the format of two singer brothers in his career. Yon Koeswoyo was jailed along with his brothers during the era of the “orde lama” (era Soekarno) because their works considered westernized. But it is said that the imprisonment aims to struggle through music. I still do not catch what it means.

Eddie Van Halen: Is Rock ‘n Roll All About Reinvention?

Buat buang kebosanan Aku waktu nungguin pembuatan Live USB Endless OS, Aku nonton beberapa video YouTube sampai akhirnya nemu video Eddie Van Halen, dewa gitar yang satu ini. Kalau sebelumnya Aku pernah nulis soal 30 gitaris keren, kali ini Aku bakal khusus bahas soal gitaris yang satu ini.

Eddie Van Halen, pentolan grup Van Halen bersama kakaknya Alex Van Halen dan anaknya Wolfgang Van Halen (yang namanya diambil dari nama seri gitar signaturenya dan juga nama komposer klasik dunia) jadi pembicara di acara “Is Rock ‘n Roll All About Reinvention?”*.

Tepat banget memang kalau ngeboyong Eddie Van Halen jadi  pembicara di acara ini, secara doi penuh dengan penemuan. Ya nama acaranya kan “Apakah Rock ‘n Roll Adalah Tentang Penemuan Kembali?”

Di sini Eddie cerita soal gimana orangtua mereka dulu harus milih antara tinggal di Indonesia atau pulang ke Belanda. Yup, buat yang belum tahu atau belom denger langsung, di sini doi cerita soal itu.

Kayanya kalau doi tetap di Indonesia gak jadi musisi ya? Mungkin main film action secara mukanya kan indo-indo gitu.

 

“Penemuan” Eddie Van Halen

Penemuan Eddie dimulai dari coba-coba, lantaran mau selalu memaksimalkan apa yang dia punya, bahkan kalau bisa melebihi kemampuan alat yang dia punya.

Doi gak mampu beli segala macem “bullshit” yang ada di antara gitar dan amp, makanya Eddie Van Halen bikin segala macam dinamikanya langsung di gitar. Itulah makanya doi sempet ngefans banget sama Eric Clapton di album Cream, karena sampai saat itu Eric Clapton adalah salah satu gitaris yang dilihatnya bermain gitar langsung ke amp.

Awalnya doi punya gitar Fender, tapi gak suka sama suaranya. Tahu kan kalau Fender suaranya twangy, apalagi katanya saat itu cuma ada yang single coil. Makanya doi nekad bobok body gitar yang dibelinya dari “barang limbah” dan bikin wiring sendiri.

Untuk pattern catnya, doi bilang kalau awalnya gitar itu dicat hitam. Tapi lantaran dirasanya ngebosenin, mulai deh tangannya jail tempel-tempelin selotip (buat masking) dan ngecat. Itulah asal muasal gitarnya yang kini diproduksi masal.

Begitu pula buat masalah sound, doi ngakalin ampnya yang secara gak sengaja dicolokin voltase yang salah dengan saklar semacam dimmer buat lampu. Jadi gainnya bisa diatur dari situ.

Yang kocak adalah percobaannya yang mau ngelelehin timah yang ada di pick-up dan dia lupa kalau pick-up itu terbuat dari plastik, walhasil malah meleleh sama pick-upnya.

Tapping Yang Signature Itu

Untuk urusan tekhnik permainannya yang menurutnya “kata orang” disebut tapping, doi malah gak pernah kasih nama buat tehnik itu. Banyak yang bilang kalau tapping itu buat penemuan doi, ya memang di gitar klasik pun ada.

Tapi menurut doi, saat dia mulai main kaya gitu tuh doi emang gak pernah liat yang lain main kaya gitu. Intinya, doi bilang kalau tapping itu adalah orisinil. Ya walaupun doi bilang terinspirasi main kaya gitu abis lihat Jimmy Hendrix yang bisa dadah-dadah sambil sebelah tangannya hamer-on dan pull-off.

Eddie Van Halen yang umurnya sekarang udah 60 tahun tetap gapeh main gitar, di sini dibuktiin dengan mainin part lagu Eruption yang melegenda itu dan sempet-sempetnya ngasih “coaching clinic”.

Pepatah Dewa Gitar

Perjuangan Eddie bukan cuma urusan tekhnis dan skill, sob… Doi harus berjuang ngangkat musiknya biar bisa didenger orang sementara saat itu bahkan rock ‘n roll belum diakui di tangga lagu dunia. Dan menurut Aku itu yang paling susah!

Doi berpegangan sama pepatah Belanda, “kalau salah ngerjain sesuatu, kerjain sekali lagi sambil senyum. Nanti orang lain bakal mikir lu sengaja”. Hmmm… ini adalah kata-kata paling berfaedah dari video berdurasi 55 menit di atas. Hahaha… Aku jadi inget di snare drum Nick Menza ada tulisan, “once is a failure, twice is jazz”.

Walaupun begitu, doi bilang bahwa ide-ide itu bisa jadi datang karena ada yang “ngasih” entah dari mana. Ini yang namanya punya rasa syukur yah…

Tapi Eddie yang kelihatan keren walaupun umurnya udah lebih dari setengah abad gak selalu sehat. Sebagai perokok berat, doi kena yang namanya kanker mulut**. Tuh, lihat foto di bawah, kerenan pakai vaporizer kan? Ga tau deh kalau di luar foto ini sih. :p

Bagian Yang Paling Mudah Diingat

Dulu, waktu gw sekolah musik di luar negeri yang ga usah gw sebutlah tempatnya (takut dikira sombong padahal pamer doang)… Gw bertemu satu pertanyaan yang mudah kalo dijawab dengan sotoy tapi ternyata salah (lantaran gw sotoy), pertanyaan itu adalah ,”mana bagian yang paling mudah diingat atau paling penting dari sebuah interlude dalam sebuah lagu?”

Ada yang tahu gak? Ternyata jawabannya adalah…

Bagian Yang Paling Mudah Diingat Dari Sebuah Interlude

…adalah bagian awal dan bagian akhirnya. Duh, kok sepele amat sih jawabannya? Jadi bagian yang mumet-mumet dilatih 8 jam sehari itu jadi gak berguna? Bergunalah… itu sebagai wow effect, signature licks, ajang pamer atau ya biar keren aja sih.

Tapi tetap awalan dan akhiran dari interlude itu yang bakal diingat sama mayoritas pendengar. Ingat, gak semua pendengarlu itu musisi loh.

Coba kumpulin beberapa orang, lalu setelin lagu Little Wing (di sini gw kasih versi Skid Row) di bawah ini :

Gw yakin sebagian besar dari mereka sontak melantunkan beberapa bar nada interlude begitu Bach selesai nyanyiin “Take anything you want from me… Anything…”

Lalu sisanya cuma kumur-kumur seingetnya. Begitu juga halnya kalo mau dipakai buat jam session, hal-hal yang lu perbuat di antara awalan dan akhiran interlude itu ya jadi ajang luapan hatilu dong. Namanya juga jam session. Kalo mau sama, panggil band tribute aja deh mendingan.

Demikian juga saat lu bikin interlude buat lagu sendiri maupun lagu orang, selalu utamakan bagian yang paling mudah diingat dulu. Bagian itu harus catchy, keren dan yang jelas bikin orang inget sama lagu yang lu isi itu secara keseluruhan…dan yang terutama inget lu sebagai gitarisnya!

Coba deh kalo iseng, lu perhatiin interlude yang dibikin sama gitaris-gitaris yang menurut gw keren bingitz ini! Ga semua mewakili tulisan ini sih, tapi pokoknya mereka tuh keren-keren aja.

Tapi gak cuma mereka yang dalam list gw itu loh yang keren, gitaris lokal kita juga keren-keren. Walau kadang ada yg kurang dipoles aja sih, misalnya… bikin video tutorial tapi fokusnya gw jadi ngeliatin paha… hayo ngaku 😀
